Learn How to Diffuse

Diffusing essential oils into the air is a simple, convenient, and flexible way to experience all the benefits of aromatherapy with your essential oil collection. Diffusers are easy to use – like, mac-and-cheese easy. They let you access benefits from your blends faster than topical application. You don’t need carrier oil. You don’t have to worry about the measuring, mess, or math that diluting full strength oils requires. A diffuser, a few drops of essential oil, and some tap water are all you’ll need. An ultrasonic diffuser will actually be one of the best investments you’ll make as you incorporate essential oils into your daily routine.

Why a Diffuser?

Although you love to use essential oils, diluting full-strength oils for topical use can sometimes be a hassle. Or maybe you have sensitive skin that revolts when exposed to tepid bath water let alone more potent products. Perhaps you have a full-strength oil that you don’t use daily, but need quick access to on occasion. Or you like to change your mind about which blend sets the mood. Whatever the reason, for a person like you a diffuser is a great option.

For an easy way to start and a long-lasting mist, try an ultrasonic diffuser. It works by creating tiny (and practically silent) vibrations that turn water and essential oil into a fine mist. The mist is dispersed into the air to be enjoyed by the whole room. Ultrasonic diffusers come with a variety of features that add to a relaxing and therapeutic atmosphere. Some include ambient lighting, intermittent timers, and various size reservoirs.

Ultrasonic diffusers work well in living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, and at the office. You can diffuse for as long or as short as you like. Turn off one oil and start another in a matter of minutes. You can also effortlessly mix different oils together to create your own aromatherapy blend.

Real Oil offers a balanced selection diffusers to function in any space:

HOW DO I USE AN ULTRASONIC DIFFUSER?

Add water

To fill an ultrasonic diffuser, remove the lid. For some diffusers it is a simple matter of lifting it from the top of the unit. For others, it is a little more complex (refer to the package directions). Add lukewarm tap water. Cold water doesn’t work; neither does distilled water. Diffusers have a “fill line” that you shouldn’t top -- but to produce more mist you actually want to keep the water below that line. You can bring the water to the diffuser in a cup and pour it, or you can put the diffuser under the tap, just be careful not to expose the electronics to water.

Add essential oils

This is the fun part. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the water. Try a single oil for a targeted punch, or mix together a few of your favorites. Diffuser capacity varies, but this is what we recommend as a rule of thumb:

For 100 ml of water (about ½ cup), add 3 to 10 drops of essential oil.. Add or subtract based on room size, the exposure you want to the oils, and the strength of a particular oil (cinnamon is much heavier than orange, for instance). Experience will teach you how much to use, and which oils work best for you. Don’t use carrier oils or pre-diluted products in a diffuser, as it will muck it up.

Get her going

Replace the lid, make sure the unit is plugged in, and turn it on. You should begin to notice mist and aroma cascading from the diffuser within the first ten seconds. If the diffuser runs out of water, it will shut itself off. After you’re finished diffusing, drain any excess water and wipe down the interior of the reservoir with a soft cloth or paper towel. Occasionally, you can clean the ultrasonic disc by moistening a cotton swab with denatured alcohol and wipe the entire disc surface. There are detailed cleaning instructions in the manual that came with the diffuser, or you can feel free to contact us for more information.

What Else Should I Know?

Diffusing can be a great way to blend oils. Add two or three complementary oils to your diffuser for both aromatherapy and physical benefits. Keep things simple to start. Overly complex oil cocktails are overwhelming and smell funky. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions or feedback on a particular combination that you have been using.

We suggest diffusing the powerful blends in the Real Oil Defense collection. Pure Air is an excellent way to keep the ambiance in your home or office fresh and clean. Diffuse Real Oil Breathe Free and Immune Boost blends when you start to feel under the weather. Try diffusing Restful Sleep overnight to help you feel relax and wake up refreshed.

Diffusing is a great way to use essential oils on children. You can use many essential oils around children two and older, though kids’ sensitivities require a lower concentration than adults. When diffusing oils near kids, start small and observe them carefully to be sure there are no adverse reactions. Don’t leave the diffuser running unsupervised (such as in their bedroom overnight). Also, do your homework, as some essential oils are not safe for use on any children.
